Rosalyn Serex of Scothorse, proudly presents Quinine, her wonderful
and much loved mare. "I first saw her at only three days old but didn't know then
that our paths would cross again. However our paths did cross when she was 5 years of age, some 4
years ago. We' ve been faithful partners and friends ever since. |
Quinine is a Swiss Warmblood mare, bred in Switzerland by my late
friend Armand Golay of "Les Charbonnières", a small
village nestled in the hills of the Jura region in La Vallée
de Joux.
His son, Richard Golay, continues his fathers' work and is now the owner and breeder of an *Elite* herd. La Vallée de Joux sits just a few miles from the French / Swiss Border and its Alpages provide ideal grazing for the horses of some of Switzerland's finest and experienced breeders. |

Quinine IA (1991) received a first premium at the age of 6 months and achieved sufficient scores as a 3 year old to be presented for the 90 day mare performance test at the Haras Federal, Bern.... She then went on to complete her "test en terrain".....(field test) Her first foal, a filly, born in 1995 was awarded first premium but sadly I do not know what has become of her... |
In 1996 our paths crossed and I fell in love with her sweet nature and gentle eye whilst searching for a new steed.... We had by that time relocated to Grenchen in the Swiss German region and took up residence at Stall Kronwall. She was presented under saddle by Herr Ruedi Wallerbosch for her *Formation test *, held at the Haras of Bern... Needless to say with such excellent tuition she passed with flying colours and was honored with the Swiss Cross brandmark..... |
1997 was met with another move... This time of greater distance... We took up residence in Glenrothes, Fife, Scotland... My husband, my three children and of course my best friend... Quinine We have since added two Lop eared rabbits Bigwig, and Floppy and a scruffy, daft, Deerhound cross to our family equation..... Unfortunately we had to leave our two other family members, Cuddles our cat and Ragusa our Bernese Mountain dog behind with friends.... |
Whilst my main love is dressage and gallivanting around the beautiful Scottish scenery, Quinines' talent is show jumping.... We have dabbled at cross country with Susan Gardener BHSII, an excellent confidence builder but alas I'm not quite as brave as my partner... Quinine |
As members of the Fife Riding club we like to try our hand at everything. The club offers a wide variety of activities across the equestrian spectrum and allows us the opportunity to compete locally... |
We' ve had lots of fun jumping and trying our hand in Hunter classes... Needless to say the clubs organised dressage tests are rarely missed! and 2000 saw us taking first place in the overall Novice dressage points league...... |
As previously mentioned however, Quinines forté is her jumping and on February 27th 1999 she commenced her career on the BSJA circuit....
In just a few months Quinine jumped her way through the levels. Her quick thinking mind and her ability to travel with precision and speed proved her unbeatable on many an occasion.... During 24 outings, she was in fact placed every time, 18 of which she jumped with 0 faults...Very often in classes of over 80 entries... |
Competition in the early months of Spring are a challenge, as every one battles it out for the 4 double clears necessary to qualify for the second round championships before the closing date in May..... Some of her successes include, the Glenvargill challenge at Dabbs Equestrian Centre and the opening Discovery speed class at the Gleneagles spring show against some 104 entries.... |
Her 4 double clear rounds in both British Novice and Discovery in the space of a few weeks qualified her for the second round qualifiers for the Festival of show jumping, Staffordshire. She did her self proud yet again, not only qualifying in the Charles Owen British novice but producing the only triple clear and taking first place at Lough farm. Her victory was published in an article in the Horse and Hound. |
This added to her previously achieved qualification in the second round Discovery Championship, held in Area 14, where she took 5th place..... In September 1999 at the Festival of show jumping,Staffordshire, Quinine qualified for the British Novice Championship final round, finishing 3rd and 10th place in the two preliminary rounds. |
By late summer Quinine had out jumped newcomers classes with her winnings and started jumping Foxhunter, Debutante and Small open classes with great skill and ease...... Tremendous achievements in such a short period of time. Quinine jumps for fun but with top bloodlines in her Pedigree such as Grand Veneur (SF) and the well known Furioso XX it is hardly surprising..... |
Adding to her achievements is her success with the Scottish Sports Horse..... In the summer of 1999 Quinine won the Scottish Sports Horse Championship for the 7 years olds and over. She also won the intermediate show jumping class, the open sports horse class, the potential show jumping class and finished the day with 3rd place in the open show jumping class over fences of 1m35.... It didn't stop there.... At the same show she impressed the Dutch Judge Jacques Verkerk with her bold and athletic jump and passed her IBOP mare performance test with a score of 81 awarding her a grade B.... Quite an achievement in one day, don't you think?.. |
The year 2000 brought with it yet another successful year taking Champion Reserve in the brood mare without foal at foot class at the Scottish Sports Horse summer show.... The same show saw Quinine taking home a Second place in the Potential Dressage Horse 7 years and over. Third in the Potential Sports Horse Class and a Second in the Potential Show Jumping class... Which led to her being awarded Reserve Champion Scottish Sports Horse 2000, Seven Years and Over |
In September 2000, Quinine was registered with the Sports Horse Breeders Of Great Britain (HIS) and presented for mare inspection. She impressed the judges with her overall presence and movement receiving an average score of 8.28 Mr P. N. Warcup, Brood Mare Committee Chairman of the society, awarded Quinine entry to the Head stud book. Stating that it was "An Honour and a privilege to have such a fine specimen registered with the society" |
As a result Quinine was awarded a stallion covering certificate to the value of £200 kindly presented by the society. Hopefully she will continue her career as a full time mum in the spring of 2002..... So be sure to WATCH this space to see pictures of future off spring.... We certainly have a fine collection of Approved Sires to choose from registered with the Society. |
Whilst I'm quite sure Quinine enjoys every minute of it all, she feels best at home just being her old self... a horse..... With a kind and gentle eye and a somewhat cheeky expression.... :) I hope you' ve enjoyed our story so far and look forwards to keeping you all updated as to the year 2001s' events and hopefully achievements.... Best wishes to passionate horse lovers and admirers all over the world...Finally, a special hello to all those that have helped us along the path to reach our goals... Quinine successfully gave birth to a filly foal on 24th May 2002. More details>>> |
