3 April – 25 May 2003
“The ultimate expression of an equine art form”
The spectacularly successful “World Famous” Lipizzaner Stallions show returns to the UK for an eight week tour from 3 April 2003, giving audiences a new chance to see these captivating white horses perform acrobatic manoeuvres that no other breed can equal.
The show, a sensational equine art form, will include new routines, music and choreography, along with the intriguing history of the noble Lipizzan breed. The 14-venue tour starts on 3 April 2003 in Bournemouth and includes many of the UK's major venues such as Wembley Arena, Birmingham NEC and Manchester Evening News Arena. The tour culminates on 25 May 2003 in Plymouth. As a keen horse lover, HRH Princess Ann will be attending the show in Aberdeen on 15 April 2003.
Fourteen Lipizzaner Stallions and their riders perform in this internationally acclaimed show, now in its 33rd year of touring. Family audiences and aficionados will share in the magic as the horses perform classical horsemanship founded on the long tradition of the Spanish Riding School of Vienna dating back to 16th century.
The natural beauty and grace of this aristocratic breed has captivated millions around the world as their nostrils flair, long white manes and tails fly and they perform intricate movements with precision and ease and awe-inspiring acrobatics including the “Airs Above The Ground”.
Lipizzaner Stallions are a rare and pure European breed and there are only 2,500 left in existence. Originally bred as combat horses, they were trained to perform athletic battle manoeuvres, including the acrobatic “Airs Above The Ground” which were designed to protect their riders or fend off attackers. These manoeuvres are now choreographed into a magnificent equestrian art form in the show, and the horse and rider team perform the “Courbette” and “Levade” and surprising kick leaps like the “Capriole”, all of which take many years of training to perfect.
The Lipizzaner Stallions are trained for 6-8 years in classical dressage to the Grand Prix or Olympic level. The show includes spectacular routines that demonstrate these skills including the grand finale “Quadrille”, a military-style equine ballet performed with intricate precision to music.
Also performing are The Andalusian horses, the ancestral forefather of the Lipizzan. The Andalusians perform with a special wardrobe in a display themed to traditional Spanish music. The riders also give a unique presentation performing all the manoeuvres of the Grand Prix Olympic level dressage on the longline, while walking behind the horse and guiding him through his paces.
The “World Famous” Lipizzaner World Tour is produced by Gary Lashinsky and has continued to delight audiences around the world since the show was first produced in 1970. Since that time, the show has played over 23 million people throughout North and South America, Canada, Great Britain, Europe, Australia and Hawaii.
